June 30-July 4, 2025 was the week Discover Quintet was at Davies Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7400 Temple Hill Road, Camp Springs, Maryland (Map). Summer '26 dates will be determined before Thanksgiving '25.
If you like playing in band, you are going to LOVE playing in a quintet!
Discover Quintet workshop is held Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 2:30pm. The week will conclude with a short Friday performance at 2pm. Auditions are open to rising 8th graders (entering 9th in Fall 2025) through rising college sophomores -- exceptions may be made for younger or older students based on a need for your instrument and proficiency. To be eligible, students must play one of these instruments:
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn or Bassoon
Since 2013, music students have been discovering the joy of hard work in Discover Quintet, a 5-day workshop. Our students learn to listen, play, relate and improve their instrumental skills as a small group. Discover Quintet opens new worlds of music, with the opportunity to receive real-time feedback with constructive help. Students learn to trust each other through daily rehearsals, all coached by top-tier professional musicians.
Some history: Discover Quintet came to Cheverly, Maryland for an excellent re-launch in Prince Georges County, with assistance from the Associated Chamber Music Players in New York in 2022. This community effort's roots were planted firmly in Montgomery County, MD at the family-owned Victor Litz Music Center long before the COVID pause. The picture above celebrates the great progress made in 2025 by terrific wind students with their coaches. See Gallery tab for shots including hornist-composer Professor Jeff Scott, formerly with Imani Winds). Students who reside in Prince George's County get some preference, if abilities between auditioning students are equal.
Coached rehearsals with fun team-building exercises are the foundation for wonderful music-making, confidence-building, and the opportunity to learn new pieces by a variety of traditional and 21st century composers. Questions? Contact Nancy Switkes, Director, [email protected], 301-412-1144.
