"Two Premiers and a Pulitzer"
Mozart, "Marriage of Figaro" Georges Onslow, "Quintet" * Alexander "Sasha" Bondarev, "Quintet" ** Paul Moravec, "Wind Quintet" *** Arne Running "Aria and Quodlibet" **** * Onslow is the "French Beethoven." TGQ is pleased to perform what we expect is the East Coast premier of this 1850 parlor music, largely neglected since WWI. ** Sasha is a Silver Spring composer, from Russia who writes children's music. His delightful piece is inspired by Stravinsky's characters in "L'Histoire du Soldat" and is influenced by the humor of Schostakovich. *** Paul won the Pulitzer Price in 2004 for a clarinet quartet. His woodwind quintet in 7 short tonal movements explores lovely, sometimes modern harmonies and includes exciting rhythmic jigsaw puzzle assembly. Recent TGQ audiences enjoyed its complexity very much. **** You will love the lush Aria that precedes the Quodlibet movement http://www.georgetownquintet.com/sound.html (3rd audio clip down). The finale leaves everyone smiling if not laughing out loud. |

The Georgetown Quintet performed a concert exploring pieces that combine jazz idioms and romantic classical composition. Featuring former electric bassist with Stevie Wonder and WeatherReport, Coltrane expert Andrew Nathaniel White III, this concert highlighted three of his jazz parodies for woodwind quintet and alto saxophone. They are based on Bach's "Easter Oratorio" and "Second Orchestral Suite," and Handel's "Third Violin Concerto."
